NAHB to Present Green Programs at Solar Decathlon

NAHB will be presenting a workshop on its national green building program and a seminar on the new green building standard during the 2007 Solar Decathlon on the National Mall later this month.

Twenty college teams from around the world will be competing in 10 contests in the 2007 decathlon to design, build and operate the most livable, energy-efficient, completely solar-powered house.

The students’ solar homes and educational exhibits will comprise a “solar village” that will be open to the public Oct. 12-20. The homes will be open every day, except Wednesday, Oct. 17, when they will be closed for purposes of the competition. A winner will be announced on Oct. 19.

NAHB, along with other organizations, is a sponsor of the decathlon, which was also held in 2002 and 2005. The primary sponsor is the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

The two NAHB presentations are:

  • “Introduction to the National Green Building Program,” at noon, Oct. 18, as part of “Building Industry Day” activities geared to professionals in the residential construction industry. Attendees will have an opportunity to try out the new interactive, Web-based certification system as well as other tools and resources for green builders and certifiers. They will learn how the program works, how projects receive certification and how builders can join a national registry. The program is set to be unveiled in February during NAHB’s International Builders’ Show in Orlando.

  • “Green Building, Defined,” at various times on Oct. 13-15. This half-hour seminar will provide a sneak preview of the first-ever ANSI-approved residential green building standard that the International Code Council and NAHB are preparing for publication in three months. Affordable and flexible, this new green building tool will establish a new national benchmark for sustainable home building and remodeling.
