Ranieri, of Hyperion, to Give Dunlop Lecture at Harvard

Lewis Ranieri

Lewis S. Ranieri, founder of Hyperion private equity funds, CEO and president of the private investment firm, Ranieri & Co., Inc., and a longtime supporter of NAHB and the housing industry, will deliver the ninth annual John T. Dunlop Lecture in Cambridge, Mass. on Oct. 2.

The lecture, co-sponsored by the National Housing Endowment and the Harvard University Joint Center for Housing Studies, begins at 6:00 p.m. in Burden Hall at the Harvard Business School.

Widely regarded as an expert and innovator in both the mortgage and capital markets, prior to founding Hyperion, Ranieri served as vice chairman of Salomon Brothers, Inc., where he helped develop the capital markets as a source of funds for housing and commercial real estate and led the effort to obtain federal legislation to support and build the market.

In 2004, BusinessWeek magazine named Ranieri one of “the greatest innovators of the past 75 years.”

Ranieri has served on the NAHB Mortgage Roundtable since 1989, is an NAHB Housing Hall of Fame inductee and is a life trustee with the endowment.

He is also a recipient of the lifetime achievement award given by the Fixed Income Analysts Society, Inc. (FIASI) and was inducted into the FIASI Hall of Fame for outstanding practitioners in the advancement of the analysis of fixed-income securities and portfolios.

The lecture series honors John T. Dunlop, Lamont University professor emeritus of Harvard University from 1985 to 2003 and advisor to U.S. presidents, beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt. He also was the secretary of labor during the Ford Administration. In 1986, Dunlop was named to the NAHB Housing Hall of Fame. He also was a founding trustee of the endowment.

The lecture series, begun in 1999, has featured such renowned housing officials and building industry leaders as Jack Kemp, former HUD secretary during the George H.W. Bush Administration; Henry Cisneros, former HUD secretary during the Clinton Administration; Angelo O. Mozilo, the CEO of Countrywide Financial; Herbert V. Kohler, founder, president and chairman of the Kohler Company; and F. Barton Harvey, chairman and CEO of Enterprise Community Partners, which has worked with more than 1,200 community-based nonprofit organizations to provide decent, affordable housing and a path out of poverty for low-income families.
