Lewis S. Ranieri, the CEO and president of Ranieri & Co., Inc., a private investment advisor and management corporation based in New York, and a longtime supporter of NAHB and the housing industry, recently donated $1 million to the National Housing Endowment. He was named a life trustee for his gift.
Ranieri’s donation enabled the endowment, the philanthropic arm of NAHB, to raise more than $20 million for its programs.
“Through the generosity of Lewis Ranieri’s unrestricted gift, the endowment will be able to continue to support innovative and effective programs that further housing industry education, training and research,” said Gary Garczynski, endowment chairman and 2002 NAHB president. “His legacy will endure for generations to come.”
Widely regarded as an expert and innovator in both the mortgage and capital markets, Ranieri is the prime originator and founder of the Hyperion private equity funds. As vice chairman of Salomon Brothers, Inc., he helped develop the capital markets as a source of funds for housing and commercial real estate and led the effort to obtain federal legislation to support and build the market.
In 2004, BusinessWeek magazine named Ranieri one of “the greatest innovators of the past 75 years.”
Ranieri has served on the NAHB Mortgage Roundtable since 1989, and is an NAHB Housing Hall of Fame inductee.
The Fixed Income Analysts Society, Inc. (FIASI) honored him with a lifetime achievement award and induction into its hall of fame in 2001. He also received the Distinguished Industry Service Award from the American Securitization Forum in 2005.
“I can only say that it has been a privilege to work with this association for more than 20 years now. I know of nothing else like it and I am happy to have devoted so much time for this very worthwhile cause,” Ranieri said.
Ranieri currently serves as chairman of American Financial Realty Trust, Capital Lease Funding, Inc., CA, Inc., Franklin Bank Corp. and Root Markets, Inc., an Internet-based marketing company.
