Majority of Households Recognize Energy Star Label
Public awareness of the Energy Star label has jumped to 68% of U.S. households, according to a recent nationwide survey released on April 25. Only 12% had only a “general” understanding of what the label means.
In many major markets where utilities and other organizations use Energy Star to promote energy efficiency to their customers, public awareness was found to be even greater, averaging 76%.
Among other key findings published last month from the Environmental Protection Agency:
- Fifty-seven percent of the households polled associated the Energy Star label with “efficiency or energy savings.”
- Of those households who recognized the Energy Star label and purchased a product in a “relevant” product category within the past 12 months, 66% purchased an Energy Star-labeled product.
- Among all households, 31% knew they had purchased an Energy Star-labeled product in the past 12 months.
- For 63% of the households who said they had purchased an energy Star product, the label was “very much” or “somewhat” influential in at least one of their purchase decisions.
- Twenty-six percent of households that purchased an Energy Star-labeled product received a financial incentive for doing so. Eighty-three percent of these households indicated that they would have been “very likely” (57%) or “somewhat likely” (26%) to purchase the labeled product even without the financial incentive.
- Seventy-one percent of households that recognized the label and purchased a product in a category where Energy Star products are an option said they were likely to recommend Energy Star products to a friend; 29% said they were “extremely” likely to make that recommendation.
The annual survey has been conducted for the past seven years.
