HBAs Offer New Green Building Course for Growing Market

The green building market is expected to grow from $7.4 billion and 2% of housing starts to up to $38 billion and 10% of residential construction activity by 2010, according to “Residential Green Building Smart Market Report” from McGraw Hill/NAHB.

With consumer demand on the rise, there is a growing opportunity for builders who can meet this market’s needs.

“People have come to us who were willing to wait a year or two until we could get to them,” said Boulder, Colo. green home builder David Johnson, president of What’s Working. “And that’s where you want to be in this business.”

To help interested builders gain a better understanding of the burgeoning green building market, The NAHB University of Housing has created “Green Building for Building Professionals” — a two-day course for builders that offers strategies for incorporating green-building principles into homes without driving up the cost of construction.

Builders will learn about the benefits green homes provide home buyers — lower maintenance, better indoor air quality, greater energy and resource efficiency, and better long-term value.

The course will also teach builders how to competitively differentiate their green homes and home products to attract green buyers.

Twelve local home builders associations across the country moved ahead of the curve last year and launched green building certification programs. There are now almost 60 programs nationwide.

This year, The NAHB University of Housing is currently offering green building courses or workshops through nine HBAs between now and the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla. in February.
