Damage From April’s Record Nor’easter Assessed

Damage assessment teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency have completed their reports of the toll taken by the record-breaking nor’easter that bore down with strong winds, heavy rains and storm surges along the Atlantic seaboard on April 15 and 16.
Working with state and local emergency management officials, FEMA assessed damage in every county in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island; 13 counties in Maine and four counties in Vermont.
The governors of all six New England states requested federal participation in preliminary damage assessments as a first step in seeking federal disaster assistance.
Teams from FEMA toured storm-affected areas to review and document:
- Damage to homes
- The impact on roads and critical facilities
- The level of insurance coverage held by home owners and public facilities
- Assistance available from other sources.
The information gathered from the damage assessments is being used by the governors to determine if the level of destruction exceeds the abilities and capabilities of state and local government.
As a result of the swift completion of the assessments, President Bush on April 27 announced that federal disaster aid was being made available for the state of New Hampshire to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by the severe storms and flooding.
