Endowment Support for Team Builders at IBS a Success
National Housing Endowment scholarships enabled 12 former Team Builders interns to join 2,000 other students and take part in the Residential Construction Competitions, the NAHB Student Chapters-sponsored Building Careers Job Fair and other activities at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla. earlier this year .
 “I learned a lot from this experience at the builders’ show,” said Amy Price, a Team Builder intern. “I think I gained more of an appreciation for everything that goes into making this industry run, as well as helping change my perspective on it.”
“There is an NAHB student chapter at Penn State, and I would consider joining it after watching the student competitions,” Price added.
“My time in Orlando did somewhat change my perspective on the industry as I began to see myself becoming a part of it,” said Delmary Salcedo, an intern in the mortgage department with Beazer Homes.
“The National Housing Endowment is embarking on an effort to increase the number of individuals entering residential construction management,” said Gary Garczynski, endowment chairman and 2002 NAHB president. “This program addresses the need in a profound way, and the endowment is excited to play a part in its success.”
Team Builders is a summer internship program by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) — the workforce development arm of NAHB — created in a partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation and its Latinos on the Fast Track program. which introduces high-achieving Hispanic college students to the residential construction industry.
Launched in January 2006, the internships address the builder’s specific recruitment needs at the management level from the many aspects of operations in residential construction management.
The initial Team Builders class completed 10-week internships during the summer of 2006 at Beazer Homes offices across the country. The program was such a success its first year that Pulte Homes will join Beazer in offering internships this summer.
The endowment scholarships were funded through the Herman and Patsy Smith Home Builders Institute Fund and the endowment’s unrestricted fund and covered the interns’ travel expenses, room and board.
The endowment is the philanthropic arm of NAHB.
