Women’s Shelter First Completed Rebuilding Project

Pella Corporation and James Hardie Building Products were among the many companies who chipped in to reopen the severely hurricane-damaged Women’s Shelter at the historic New Orleans Rescue Mission. Both are members of the National Council of the Housing Industry (NCHI) — The Supplier 100 of NAHB.

Renovation of the 4,000-square-foot shelter, located one-quarter mile southeast of the Louisiana Superdome, was led by HomeAid, the country’s leading non-profit developer of transitional housing, in partnership with Ameriquest Mortgage Company and its affiliates. The shelter will be used to house single women who were evacuated from their homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Pella donated its premium windows, which use glass with a rigid layer of laminate material heat-sealed between two layers of glass. One of the laminate materials featured in the Hurricane Shield® products that were used in the rebuilding project provide 100 times the rigidity and five times the tear resistance of other common laminate materials.

James Hardie supplied its Hardiplank and Harditrim siding products for the renovation. They were specifically selected for their durability, as well as strength and thickness, which provide impact resistance to hurricane winds. The siding comes with a 50-year limited transferable warranty and does not warp, crack, rot or delaminate. It holds paint three to four times longer than wood and resists damage from termites, a significant issue in the New Orleans area.

HomeAid has five more rebuilding projects in the Gulf Coast area either planned or under construction. They are being funded through a $3 million donation from Ameriquest and its affiliates.

Others who contributed to the renovation of the women’s shelter include Olde World Builders & Remodelers, the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans, Georgia-Pacific Corporation and CalPASC.
