Endowment Awards Three Associations Matching Funds

The National Housing Endowment, the philanthropic arm of NAHB, has awarded $12,500 to three local home builders associations through the Challenge/Build/Grow matching funds initiative.

Since the program was launched in 2001, more than $95,000 has been awarded to associations HBAs to support local initiatives ranging from education, land use and labor shortage/worker training.

The following are the latest recipients of the Challenge/Build/Grow grants:

  • The Southern Arizona Home Builders Association (SAHBA) received a grant of $5,000 to support its Institute of Construction.

This program addresses the issue of labor shortage and worker training by teaching life and technical skills in eight trades. Trainees receive a minimum wage salary while they are learning and working on an actual construction site. Trainees must be 18 years old or older.

Local contractors and home builders have partnered with SAHBA. The endowment and Peter Herder, the 1984 president of NAHB, are providing additional program funding.

  • The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago and its Greater Chicagoland Housing Foundation received $5,000 for its Promoting Quality Growth program.

The Promoting Quality Growth program was created to educate the public, policy-makers and businesses on the value of sensible growth and to promote a participatory process for determining sensible growth goals in Chicago-area communities.

  • The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Maine received $2,500 to support its Residential Ventilation for Healthy Indoor Air Quality Program.

This is a training series for association members on effective ventilation strategies in new and existing homes and partners with state and local organizations to respond to state mandated code changes. The association will work with the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council to create course curriculum and promote the program.

Open to state and local associations, the Challenge/Build/Grow program offers up to $5,000 in matching funds for projects targeting issues of importance to the housing industry.
