HBI Chair to Increase Housing's Profile Among the Young
 New Mexico builder and developer Michael Sivage has been named 2006 chairman of the board of trustees of the Home Builders Institute (HBI), the workforce development arm of NAHB. Sivage assumed his new role at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 11, taking over from Patsy R. Smith, a builder and developer from Ft. Worth, Texas.
Sivage is the owner and CEO of Michael Sivage Homes & Communities, which currently builds in the San Antonio market. Sivage also owns and manages Sivage Community Development, which is involved in a number of developments, most notably in New Mexico.
Sivage and his family sold their interests in Sivage-Thomas Homes to Pulte Homes in 2003. While its president and CEO, Sivage’s company built more than 8,500 homes in Arizona and New Mexico, with revenues exceeding $1 billion.
One of his first official activities as chairman was a presentation to the NAHB Board of Directors announcing HBI’s new “Make It Happen” campaign to promote careers in the home building industry. One of his top priorities at HBI will be reaching out to and promoting the industry among students as they consider the career path they would like to pursue.
“It is critical that we tell young people about our industry, that they hear that no matter what their talents or skills, whether an artist or a math wiz, there are opportunities in residential construction for them,” said Sivage.
As a graduate of New Mexico State University with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Sivage’s career in the home building industry exemplifies the message he wants to share with today’s younger generation. As HBI chairman he will also work on behalf of the institute’s ongoing efforts to include effective construction-related curriculums at high schools and colleges.
The 2005 chairman of NAHB’s Public Affairs committee, Sivage is a life director of NAHB. He serves on numerous committees, including Association Planning, Budget and Finance, and Legislative and Regulatory Policy Review. He is also past president of the Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico and the New Mexico Home Builders Association. He serves on numerous for-profit and non-profit boards and is the director of the National Committee of State Home Builders and chairman of the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority.
