Washington Home Builder Recognized for Safety Program
Quadrant Homes and its 10 residential development sites in the Puget Sound area of Washington recently became the first home building company in the nation and the state to receive Voluntary Protection Program Star recognition for its excellence in workplace safety and health.
The distinction was awarded by Washington State’s Department of Labor and Industries under the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act.
To qualify for the distinction, Quadrant Homers had to meet the criteria of a 19-point program promoting worker safety and health excellence.
A team of nine safety and health evaluators from the state’s labor department surveyed each site over a three-week period. Written safety programs, documentation and work site conditions were extensively reviewed and more than 194 construction site workers were interviewed.
The Star status was conferred on Quadrant Homes for its leadership, commitment, excellent safety record and extensive employee participation in a continual safety and health improvement program.
Across the country, 1,337 sites have received Star status for meeting standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; only 45 of them are construction sites.
Peter Orser, president of Quadrant Homes, thanked his company’s core group of subcontractors and vendors and their more than 1,000 employees for their contribution to helping achieve Star status. “Without their continued support and commitment to safety and health, this Star award could not have been attained,” he said.
