Green Building Conference Draws Record Attendance
More than 800 builders, developers, architects, engineers, consultants and environmental experts gathered in Atlanta earlier this month at the National Green Building Conference to learn ways to “green the American dream.”
Attendance was up nearly 20% from last year for several reasons, according to Eric Borsting, chairman of this year’s conference and an NAHB member from Stockton, Calif:
- Attendees came to the conference to learn more about NAHB’s recently released Model Green Home Building Guidelines, which have given all builders a way to add environmentally friendly building techniques to their practice, he said.
- Twenty-six different educational sessions provided instruction on how to site, design, build and market green homes. NAHB’s new green building guidelines were also explored in a three-part learning track.
- And more than 67 exhibitors displayed the latest in green building products and services.
NAHB First Vice President David Pressly and U.S. Department of Energy Assistant Secretary David Garman were on hand to present National Green Building Awards to 11 recipients.
Building America, a program of the Department of Energy, received a Green Advocate of the Year award for helping the building industry adopt systems engineering approaches to home design and construction. This approach has been used in the design of more than 26,000 houses.
“Our homes are such an important part of our values demonstrating personal responsibility, the desire to provide succeeding generations with something better and the pride of ownership,” said Garman. The green building movement adds a new dimension and richness to those values, he said.
A new green Web site to provide green building videos and features for builders was also announced at the conference. The Web site, www.hgtvpro.com, is a collaboration between NAHB and The Scripps Network.
