National Housing Endowment Awards Grants for Housing-Related Initiatives

“We’re pleased to be able to support such a large array of worthwhile initiatives,” said Dale Stuard, chairman of the National Housing Endowment and 1988 NAHB president. “Each of these projects has the potential to positively impact the housing industry while making an enormous difference in the lives of others.”

The following have been awarded funding:

• The Joint Center for Housing Studies, Harvard University ($7,000). The award will support publication and distribution of “A Call to Action: Strengthening Workforce, Communities, and Regions through Housing Solutions.” The report draws attention to the implications of housing costs, housing quality and residential development patterns for business decisions, economic competitiveness and human and community development.
• 2004 Zarrow Mental Health Symposium ($15,000). This national conference,
  “A Place to Call Home: Exploring Innovative Approaches to Housing for People With Mental Illness,” will convene community leaders, including members of the home building industry, to focus on eliminating homelessness and substandard housing for people with mental illness.
• International Housing Conference of the Americas ($10,000). Grant funds will provide scholarships for top Mexican university students to attend the November 2004 conference, a joint partnership between NAHB and Mexico’s National Industry Chamber for the Development of Promotion of Housing (CANADEVI).
• National Housing Endowment/Home Builders Care Project of the Year Award, 2004-2008 ($33,875). The annual award program recognizes an outstanding community service project developed and implemented by an NAHB member or a local or state home builders association. Winners receive a $5,000 contribution to the charity of their choice and are recognized at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show.
• Challenge/Build/Grow Grant Initiative ($20,000). Open to organizations within the NAHB federation, the Challenge/Build/Grow program offers matching funds for projects targeting issues of importance to the housing industry. Nine state and local home builders associations received grants, including the BA of Eastern Connecticut; the HBA of Ft. Wayne, IN.; the HBA of Northern Kentucky; the HBA of Lincoln, NE; the HBA of Fargo-Moorhead, ND; the HBA of Metropolitan Portland, OR; the Home Builders/Remodelors Association of Mahoning Valley, OH; the Greater San Antonio BA; and the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties, WA.
