NAHB Members, Job Corps Students Help DC Habitat in Family Build

The Tomlinson family will soon move into its new home thanks to the efforts of dozens of volunteers participating in NAHB’s Family Build, April 24-29 in Washington, D.C.

Spearheaded by NAHB’s Senior Officers’ wives, the project was organized this year by Annette Rayburn, who worked to ensure the build got underway in time to allow board members to participate in advance of official activities during their spring meeting.

She and husband Bobby Rayburn, NAHB president and member of the Board of Trustees of the Home Builders Institute (HBI), also made sure students from area Job Corps programs had a chance to practice their construction skills and give back to the community. The Rayburns have been closely involved with HBI’s training efforts across the country, most recently visiting the Long Beach Job Corps Center in California.

Instructors and students from the Potomac Job Corps Center, the Francis Perkins Job Corps program at the U.S. Department of Labor and the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel, MD, worked side by side with board members and their families, including HBI Chairman Jim Sattler as well as District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams and NAHB staff.

Sattler joined the mayor, Annette Rayburn and former NAHB Executive Vice President Kent Colton for brief remarks during the build. “We are proud to be part of Family Build again this year — helping another local family realize the dream of owning a home,” he said. “This valuable hands-on experience enables our Job Corps students to give back to the city, and to apply the very skills that will earn them a good living one day,” he added.
