NAHB Promotes Fair Housing Accessibility Compliance
Working with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, NAHB has been extensively involved in the development of a program designed to promote home builder compliance with the accessibility requirements of the Fair Housing Act.
Sponsored by HUD, Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST consists of a comprehensive training curriculum, a toll-free hotline and a Web site providing technical guidance to the public.
BearingPoint, a company based in McLean, VA, is administering the program.
The program is aimed at public and private owners, developers, architects, property managers and others who are required to engage in building design, construction and management practices that do not discriminate against people with disabilities.
Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST emphasizes the importance of planning for compliance before engineering, design or construction, since “it is easier and cheaper to plan and build in compliance with the law than it is to retrofit a structure after construction.”
