Smart Growth Communities Honored
Three new residential communities have been recognized by the Best in American Living Awards for their adherence to such NAHB smart growth principles as pursuing mixed-use and transit-oriented development; providing a mix of housing choices to meet the needs of a range of household types and incomes; and building at high densities.
Ohlone Chynoweth Commons in San Jose, CA, won the top platinum award for smart growth development in 2002. The community includes 194 one- to four-bedroom rental units on an 8.65-acre infill site adjacent to a previously underused light-rail station. It also features an affordable day-care center, retail space, pedestrian walkways and open space.
Taking the gold smart growth award, Anthony Square, a mixed-income neighborhood revitalization development in Rochester, NY, transformed a distressed, low-income housing project into 45 rental units and 23 owner-occupied single-family homes.
