Editor... In this issue: Designation v Certification: What's in a Name?Designation, Certification and Verification: Sometimes, it's hard to keep it all straight. Especially because all three are launching at the International Builders' Show with the NAHB National Green Building Program. A new designation from the NAHB University of Housing for successful completion of green and sustainable building education was approved at the Fall Board of Directors meeting. The Certified Green Professional designation will be based on the existing "Green Building for Building Professionals" two-day course and a business management course for a total of 24 hours of training. Designees will also be required to sign a code of ethics and to complete 12 hours of continuing education every two years. The designation is meant to enhance the launch of the green building program and NAHB leaders expect many builders to take advantage of it -- but it is unrelated to the certification and verification of homes. In the NAHB National Green Building Program, projects are verified locally and certified nationally, but the University of Housing designation does not qualify people to serve as verifiers. Verifiers will meet criteria set by the NAHB Research Center now being tested by the pilot program.
