E-mail Our Editor In this issue: News for Green Building Program StakeholdersAs most of you know, I have oversight over the NAHB Green Building Program as well as the work of the NAHB Research Center. Earlier this month, The NAHB Board of Directors voted to invest more than $2 million in the creation of a new National Green Building Program. The bulk of this money will be spent at the NAHB Research Center, which has already contracted with software and Web development experts to create a very user-friendly certification program for our members. At the board's direction, staff at NAHB and the Research Center are moving quickly on the program's development. We have set a very ambitious goal to launch the program in late February 2008! There's a lot to be done, and I know all of you have many questions about the directions we plan to take. I want to be very honest with you. We don't have all the answers yet. I am sending you this e-mail to make sure you're apprised of our progress, give you an opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions and, most importantly, keep our lines of communication open. This message is the first of regular updates I plan to deliver, perhaps every 3-4 weeks – or whenever there is an important announcement to make. Here's a link to the press release that went out two weeks ago to announce the formation of the new program. In addition, there are other developments I'd like to share with you. 100,000 Green Homes. Thanks to all of you who answered the brief survey questions last month that our Public Affairs staff posed to local green program administrators. We celebrated your success in a press release sent out during the Spring Board of Directors meeting – nearly 100,000 green homes built by NAHB members! When I say that the national program will support these successful local programs, I mean it. These pioneers have a lot to teach all of us. Voluntary programs – not mandates – are key to this dynamic growth.
The Program FAQ. As I said earlier, we don't have all the answers yet to the many questions you've supplied, but we will be developing a "Frequently Asked Questions" document as the program takes shape. We're also looking at designs for our national ad campaign – as well as ideas for a snappy tagline. I am sure the next issue of this informal memo will have more detailed information to share.
NAHB Research Center Update. Their staff is looking forward to reviewing a preliminary design for the program Web site -- one that we'd like you to review, as well -- and continues to meet with its consultant team on the software architecture for the green scoring and certification tools, incorporating flexibility to serve the Guidelines, then the standard, then local participating programs.
Thanks again to all of you for your support and hard work. Please don't hesitate to contact me or any of the staff listed at the bottom of this memo if you have questions or concerns.
