Concrete Builder Profile: Security Building Group

The first in an ongoing series that will profile members of CHBC.

Concrete Home Building Council member Security Building Group (SBG) is more than just a builder. The company is a collaborate endeavor between experienced residential builders and concrete contractors with a mission to marry the two great advantages of concrete construction: beauty and strength. This Raleigh, NC-based company is dedicated to constructing disaster-resistant home throughout the state.

SBG is committed to cast-in-place removable form concrete construction, “not only for its safety and security qualities,” said Dave Pfanmiller, Managing Partner of SBG, “but because it is an energy-efficient, quiet, and environmentally responsible way to build better homes.”

“As long as hurricanes continue to threaten the coast, our product will prosper,” Pfanmiller continued . “The storm resistance certainly is not the only benefit of concrete construction, but it is the most emotional and easiest to sell.”

In 2001 SBG built, in downtown Raleigh’s historic Mordecai area, their first North Carolina concrete home. By the spring of 2003, SBG completed their first oceanfront project with six condominiums in North Topsail Island, NC.

The Intracoastal Waterway is only a few hundred yards away and it's possible to fish for flounder off the rear decks.

Mr. Pfanmiller believes Topsail Island one of SBG’s bigger successes. “This (Topsail) is unique because it is truly a micro-market.  It is a resort community and the natives are very close-knit.  When we started work on the island, I made the comment that "when we get a call from a local builder or real estate broker asking how they could get one of these concrete houses, we will have arrived. We will have created a presence that will lead to our success." Pfanmiller exclaimed.

“In the last 30 days I have gotten calls from two brokers and a local builder. We are on the verge of coming full circle in this market. Now, count how many markets are just like this between Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach. I can't wait to see what happens in the next year.”

And of course, with the successes comes the challenges. Pfanmiller’s biggest challenge has been patience. “I never dreamed that it would take as long as it has to get SBG established. Ironically, the roadblocks we have overcome have had nothing to do with concrete issues.”

Pfanmiller states SBG finds themselves in the developer role, providing their own building sites. “This was new territory and it took time to learn the ropes. We are still searching for that special development partner that shares the enthusiasm for concrete construction.”

The interior concrete walls will be skim coated and highlighted with a skip trowel finish that will complement the Tuscany decorating theme.

The exterior driveways and walks will be pervious concrete to comply with local storm water regulations.

Security Building Group is one of the Concrete Home Building Council’s and the Systems Builder Council’s newest members.
